Bulgari is all about the bling. Well, at least that is what everyone thinks, especially since we repeatedly hear the brand's name when celebrities are revealing who they're wearing on the red carpet. Truth is, the fine jeweler has a lot more to offer. Like bags, eyewear and scarves. (If beauty is more your bag, it also offers sensational-smelling fragrances.) Now comes word that designer Mary Katrantzou has been named Bulgari's creative director of leather goods and accessories.
First, a little refresher on the Greek designer. Katrantzou studied architecture at Rhode Island School of Design graduating with a bachelor's degree in textile design and she also has a master's degree in fashion from Central Saint Martins. Her graduation presentation piqued industry interest and when she started her eponymous line in 2008, she earned the title Queen of Print for her bold and vibrant pieces.
"Print can be as definitive as a cut or a drape and allows a woman to filter the beauty found in design," explains Katrantzou. "Our collections create a symbiosis between the world of digital technology and traditional craftsmanship, opening up a huge spectrum for possibility. I can create possibility out of impossibility, surrealism out of realism and both vice versa."
Even though she's taking a break from putting on runway shows, Katrantzou is still very busy. You may now want to call her the Queen of Collaborations, however, as the designer has partnered with some of the biggest names around. We're talking Longchamp, Moncler, Topshop, Adidas Originals, Victoria's Secret and, of course, Bulgari.
"The rich cultural heritage and dual Greco-Roman roots of Bulgari have played an integral part in my formation as a designer," she says. "I've always been inspired by the design codes and syncretism of Bulgari, its mastery of colours and the depth of narrative. I'm deeply honoured to be the first Creative Director of Bulgari Leather Goods and Accessories, leading the creative vision for this new chapter and elevating everyday life into a form of art."
Katrantzou will navigate her new role while running her own brand. Which means she'll really have her hands full. But we're looking forward to a barrage of pattern-heavy accessories that still evoke the spirit of Bulgari. It'll be an interesting balance, but we're pretty convinced she'll have no problem accomplishing such a seemingly tricky feat.
Katrantzou's debut Bulgari collection drops in August and will be available in Bulgari boutiques worldwide. You may want to start saving your pennies now because these sure-to-be must-haves are bound to come with Bulgari pricing.
