Denim is always a go-to seasonal staple. Whether it takes the form of jeans, jackets, skirts, shirts, dresses, and even shoes and bags (as it has this spring), you can wear denin 365 days a year. The only thing that changes is the denim trends, which can be tricky to keep up. That's where we come in.
In an effort to make pulling together your spring outfits easier, we've broken down the latest denim trends and the best ways to style them. Once again, we're relying on the street style set to help illustrate. Ahead: The best jeans styles to wear right now.
Wide Leg Jeans
Wide-leg jeans have their DNA in boho and 70s dressing and are an elevated take on the casual jeans look. The key is to keep things streamlined up top— a simple t-shirt, a chic button-down, or a mid-drift if you're game. Accent the jeans with a statement belt and finish with ballet flats, a chunky loafer or dress them up with a stiletto heel.
Flare Jeans
Not to be confused with the wide-leg jean, 70s style flares are more streamlined up top and flare toward the bottom. A flare looks great in any shade, but we love this darker wash teamed with a denim vest in a lighter shade. Or again a chic shirt and t-shirt applied here. You'll definitely want to wear pumps, heeled sandals, or a cute cowboy boot to ensure you don't lose the flare.
Baggy Jeans
90s style slouchy, baggy jeans are back and dressier than ever when paired with a crop top, classic blazer, wide buckle belt and some cool kicks or platform sandals, which will help balance that extra bulk.
High-Waisted Jeans
If you're digging a high-waisted silhouette, which is stylish and super flattering provided you keep the rest of your look simple. Tuck a white tank top into that sky-high waist and slip a long cardigan or jacket on top for the best ratio. Heels are another way to balance out the look.
Mom Jeans
Since mom jeans usually have a higher waist and straight legs, balance is important. Try tucking a colorful short-sleeve shirt or relaxed sweater into the waistband and cap things off with vibrant pumps. (The heels will help elongate the legs.)
Cropped Jeans
Cropped jeans are warm-weather staples that will keep you cool and allow you to show a little ankle cleavage. For an edgy variation on the traditional cropped jean, try it in a flared slashed style. A graphic tee and your Adidas sambas or clogs will up your cool factor.
Low Rise Jeans
You can also rock two trends at once with wide-leg, low-rise jeans. They kind of offset each other. Pair them with a button-down (a little unbuttoned) white accessories (a huge look for spring) and some statement neck candy.
Barrel Jeans
Perhaps nothing is as vexing as figuring out what to wear with barrel jeans. Their balloon legs and tapered hems can really stump people, which is why they avoid them. But if you want to do a denim flex, these are the pair to pull off. Contrast them with a colorful or interesting print top and anchor them with platform sandals.
White Jeans
Forget that tired rule that you can't wear white after Labor Day. A white jean is a fashion classic and while we love our winter whites, summer is definitely the time white jeans shine. As for the cut, when it comes to this season we love white high-waisted jeans with a subtle flare. Pair it with a white button-down and neutral shoes for your new seasonal uniform— though as white is a timeless neutral it will go with anything and looks particularly chic with black, sky blue and contrasting neutral hues like sand.
