Winter is full of fashion-related dilemmas. How do I stay warm yet look put-together? Can I still wear heeled boots? Will I be able to raise and lower my arms with five layers of clothing on? It also inspires a healthy slew of beauty concerns. How do I treat or, better yet, prevent chapped lips? Do I need to wear sunscreen during the winter months? How can I avoid the disastrous hat head? We're tackling that last one by compiling the top 10 hat hairstyles courtesy of the runways.
While most are from fall collections, surprisingly some do come from spring presentations. The common thread is that the hairdos work with a topper and after said topper comes off, they still hold up. In a few cases, the looks only work with specific types of hats. Fortunately, winter chapeaus come in a wide range of styles, from standard beanies to berets to furry bucket shapes and even trapper-type hats.
Keep reading to learn the best hat hairstyles to rock for the rest of the season. Feel free to also sport them in spring.
A chic, wide headband is perhaps the easiest way to keep strands in place. Pick a neutral shade like taupe so the band will really pop against your hat of choice.
Instead of starting a Dutch braid on the top of your head, begin along the sides. Then loop the ends together and secure for a style that's chic and hat-ready.
Space buns aren't just for music festivals. Keep them relatively loose and set them behind your ears to leave enough room for a variety of toppers.
Can't decide between a middle or a side part? Split the difference by embracing a more angular approach. (That way onlookers will get a surprise anytime you remove your hat.) Pull the top section of your hair into a half ponytail, then tuck and loop the ends of all your locks at the nape of your neck.
Scrunchies are back in a big way, By that we mean the oversize kinds are picking up steam. Use an exceptionally frilly one to hold a low bun in place. This look looks really good with newsboy or baseball caps as well as wool berets.
Sometimes a twist is all it takes. If you have short-to-medium locks, simply twist one side and pin your strands back. It creates a nice resting place for a cool topper.
We're totally on board with bringing the side ponytail back. Part your strands to one side and place the pony right along your eye line. Then tease the heck out of it.
A trio of skinny braids on one side of your head helps keep flyaways out of the winter discussion.
Take side-parted strands and roll each side back into twisted buns. It's totally acceptable, heck even encouraged, if a few locks fall out in the process or as the day goes on.
Face-framing skinny braids really pop when paired with hats or the still-trending balaclavas.
