If you're going to go out, it's best to do it on top. As expected, John Galliano just officially announced he's parting ways with Maison Margiela. Over the last 10 years, the designer has reintroduced the fashion house (and himself) to the world in grand style. Galliano's last haute couture collection was simply stunning, earning praise for both him and makeup maven Pat McGrath from critics and fashion fans alike. The process behind creating the history-making lineup was even captured on film for a slasher flick.

The split appears amicable with Galliano praising Renzo Rosso in a letter posted on the designer's Instagram. He also discusses his ongoing sobriety and how the support of his teams and the industry has helped him stay on the path. Galliano doesn't reveal where he's heading next, but he's definitely got options as many fashion houses are still in flux. It would be interesting to see him head up Helmut Lang or Celine. Chanel and Christian Dior, the latter fired him back in December 2010, are probably not on the table. Especially since Bottega Veneta's Matthieu Blazy is rumored to have clinched the Chanel gig. Galliano does address the speculation saying, "Everyone wants to know, and everyone wants to dream. When the time is right, all will be revealed."

There's another important question looming: Who will take over the reins at Maison Margiela? They'll certainly have some big shoes to fill.
