Oh how the suffragists of yesteryear would smile at the fashion trends of today. While once women fought tooth and nail for the right to wear trousers in public, nowadays we can hit the streets entirely pants-free without anyone so much as batting an eyelash. At least in major cities. Talk about sartorial liberation.
Over the last year several designers and celebrities have demonstrated their fondness for pantless dressing. In a world where hemlines have no upper limits (see Miu Miu's viral Spring 2022 micro skirt) and visible undergarments and freed nipples are part of our quotidian existence, it is a logical progression.
The styling choice was a major trend on the Fall 2023 runways. Brands like Marni, Miu Miu, Prada, Christian Dior, Coperni, SIMKHAI and Ferragamo showed various leg-focused looks. At Coperni, Prada and SIMKHAI coats and blazers doubled as minidresses. At Ferragamo, micro shorts masqueraded as suit bottoms. At Miu Miu, high-fashion briefs accompanied gorgeously layered cardigans, hoodies and peacoats.
Among the celebrity pioneers of the pantless trend are Kendall Jenner, Taylor Swift, Gisele Bündchen and Emma Corrin. The latter wore look 48 from Miu Miu's Fall 2023 collection at the Venice International Film Festival. The Crown actress paired a buttoned-up sage cardigan and matching briefs with sheer black tights and polished brown oxfords.
Bündchen attended Frame's Spring 2024 New York Fashion Week party in an oversized denim coat from the brand, no jeans necessary. For an October get-together at Bradley Cooper's house, Swift employed a similar styling trick by pairing an oversized black rugby shirt by Stella McCartney with knee-high chestnut boots, a relatively modest take on the trend.
Jenner's been perhaps the most visible supporter of the trend sporting no-pants looks on several recent occasions. The model and tequila peddler wore a high-hem trench coat as a minidress to take in the Gucci Spring 2024 show. She donned a cocoon-like cable knit sweater with matching sock boots for a grocery run. For a summer night out in New York City, she styled an oversized white button-down with a roomy navy blazer, white hot pants, black leather loafers from The Row, black square-frame sunglasses and a broken-in Yankees cap. (Yes, she was way overdressed for July, lucky for those of us copying her outfit this unseasonably warm fall.)
Feeling inspired? Ready to exercise your right to leave your pants at home? To avoid it being a stress dream come to life, we suggest investing in briefs that are meant to be seen and not in the lingerie sense. Shop those and some of our favorite celeb-inspired toppers below.
