The arrival of spring is an excuse to show a little skin. A pop of shoulder here, a peek of navel there, a strategically placed triangle of the hip, a little thigh, your mid drift if you're game. And the best way to do this fashion-wise is to get on board with the cut-out trend, which had a major moment on the spring 24 runways and is now popping up on maxi and sun dresses, and adding a little slash to statement tops and denim.

Hordes of designers have already cosigned the trend. The Spring 2024 collections of Ann Demeulemeester, Atlein, Fendi, Peter Do, Sacai, Issey Miyake, Alexander McQueen and Courrèges, to name just a few, featured clothing that had been artfully slit and shredded as if by Edward Scissorhands or a medicated Wolverine. Patches of skin were also visible at Luar, Eckhaus Latta, LaQuan Smith, and designers flexed their construction skills. We love this white slashed tee and dark jeans combo (above at Peter Do), which is a great way to add a little edge to a denim wardrobe.

Taylor Swift also green-lit the trend at the Super Bowl in Las Vegas when she wore black high-waisted Area jeans featuring narrow mirroring thigh cut-outs bordered by tiny crystals. Stylist Joseph Cassell topped off the look with a black Dion Lee corset that also had a cut-out bodice.

How to Wear Cut-Outs

When it comes to cut-out outfits and an intention slash, the key to ensuring your look skews less ice dancer, more high fashion, and interesting as opposed to distracting, is to have one key social point of interest. Pair a spliced top with tailored trousers or an undone skirt with crisp shirting or peekaboo denim with a structured bustier. A cutout dress (again subtle is the name of the game) is also a winner for spring and beyond chic in midi and maxi styles in black, white, and neutral shades.
